but split

Split a commit in two.

Sources must all be committed changes from the same commit. Files and hunks may be mixed.

Usage: but split <SOURCES> [OPTIONS]

Arguments

  • <SOURCES> — The committed files and hunks to move into a new commit (required)

Options

  • -m, --message <MESSAGE> — The message to use for the new commit.

Can be supplied any amount of times, each value being appended to the preceding ones with a blank line in between. Without -m, the new commit will get an empty message.

  • -F, --file <FILE> — Read the new commit's message from FILE, or from stdin when FILE is -
  • --allow-merged — Allow targeting branches and commits that are already merged upstream.

By default, mutations refuse to touch history that has landed in the target branch, since the results tend to conflict on the next but pull.
